When Muslim cleric Abdul Ahmad came out as gay last week he had no idea how his Islamic brothers respond.
“To be honest i was scared” he told us from Sydney’s Lakemba mosque while twirling some prayer beads around his perfectly manicured fingers.
“In hindsight it’s embarrassing, but i was mainly afraid due to the reputation of Muslims throwing gay people off buildings in most of the Islamic world”
“But it turns out it was all in my head”
“Islam is one of the most tolerant and accepting of all religions and now that Abdul has come out we hope more clerics are willing to do the same”
“Who knows? Maybe Islam is full of homosexuals”
“They should come out as well”
“At the end of the day we’re all brown on the inside”
